PUBLIC HEARING #1 MINUTES

July 23, 2012

PRESENT:  D. Maguire, P. Wood, J. Gehrls, T. Humpert, A. Leen

ABSENT:  L. Hall, T. Wassa

EMPLOYEES:  S. Hadaway, M. Couture, W. Prusi

VISITORS:  D. Stevens, B. Phelps, S. Young

Special Meeting/Public Hearing #1 for reestablishing the Fairgrove Police Department was called to order at 9 a.m. 

Audience Recognition:

D. Stevens, B. Phelps, and S. Young expressed security concerns, and asked the status of the police department. 

President Maguire stated that the police car is paid for and still owned by the village, and Antoine LaPratt is in the process of filing the necessary paperwork to reestablish the police department.  Wood stated that once the process is complete, the council will be able to set the schedule of days/hours worked the new police officer will be on duty.

President Maguire stated that the council is also considering placing cameras in known trouble spots, as well as possibly starting a Neighborhood Watch Program.

W. Prusi mentioned that the village used to have reserve volunteers to assist the former police officer, but Wood stated that there were many complaints.

Leen commented that a lack of parental involvement is a problem, and she supports the idea of a Neighborhood Watch in an effort to enforce the village 11 p.m. curfew for minors.  Gehrls stated that she thinks the cameras are a good idea, and Humpert added that the cameras would provide proof.

S. Hadaway stated that for the Economic Vitality Incentive Program (EVIP), we need to have coordination of services with another community starting next year in order to remain qualified; otherwise, there will be a $2,400.00 revenue loss.  The police department and fire department mutual aid do not count.  W. Prusi suggested sharing equipment with Akron’s DPW.

As there was no other business, meeting adjourned at 9:30 a.m.
